Nodark Camera, c.1899-?
Advertisements

This is a scan of the front (right) and back (left) covers of a c.1899 - 1900 Nodark instruction book. The cover has a delightful portrait of a well dressed Victorian woman proudly holding a Nodark in the air. The numbers 1!, 2!, and 3! overlay the images with the tag line "Pictures Taken, Developed, and Delivered in 3 minutes. The woman's gay attitude and neat attire supports an advertising theme that the camera was indeed convenient, clean, and easy to use. Not surprisingly, the (messy) developing tank never appears in the ads.

Nodark Camera advertisements portrayed a simple camera that could deliver finished pictures in minutes. The camera was also characterized as "clean, complete, and convenient," something amateur photographers would find very appealing.

The Nodark instruction book cover was reused for separate advertising. This 1900 advertisement is from the Ladies Home Journal.

Nodark listing appearing on page 90 of Andrew J. Lloyd's 1900 catalogue.
