Anthony's Novelette Square Face Camera, c1880s February 2008
Anthony's Novelette Camera (square face)
It's time to get serious and start working this website once again. My annual 2008 international listing of camera shows is finally posted. Only 70 shows are listed. Hopefully the decline in shows is nothing more than not getting info as opposed to the "eBay effect."

2008 is already getting off to a start with two significant acquisitions: Pearsall Campact (c.1882) and a Gibbs View (c.1890s). But for February, a wonderful Anthony 1/2-plate Novelette is posted. It's another fine example of the quirky and wonderful world of Anthony.

Odd Accessories Every once in a while, I acquire odds and ends that go with these early cameras. Some of my favorite items include early brass exposure meters and ground glass viewers. Watch for a new section in the coming months that will highlight some of these interesting items.

The Wood & Brass Cameras Lot's of Internet surfers are finding wrting about their camera finds from antique shops, family attics and so forth. I'm also happy to note that new collectors are discovering the timeless beauty of early wood and brass cameras. The good news is that wood cameras continue to be discovered in attics and occasionally a wonderful item worthy of the Antiques Roadshow is brought to my attention. Keep looking in all those dusty corners! You never know what may be hiding.

I have enjoyed receiving e-mails from those of you looking to identify "hidden treasures" as well as the correspondence and excitement of discovering hidden gems -- especially a rare 1840s 1/4-plate American Chamfered daguerreian camera that sold for close to $14,000 many years back and then resold for $18,000 in 2007.

Be sure to check back for updated postings, and feel free to drop an e-mail if you have questions about pre-1900 wood cameras or just want to show off a newly found item. If there is a wood camera that you would like to have identified, please provide as many details as possible AND include an image because it's impossible to identify a camera simply from a description!
